Jewish community of Diedelsheim

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The beginnings of the Jewish community in Diedelsheim , a district of the city of Bretten in the district of Karlsruhe ( Baden-Württemberg ), go back to the 16th century. On March 11, 1920 , the Jewish community was officially dissolved.

history

In Diedelsheim, 1548 Jews are mentioned for the first time . Until the beginning of the 19th century, the Jewish families lived mainly in Judengäßle (today Brühlstraße). The Jewish inn Zum Lamm was also located here . The highest number of Jewish residents was reached in 1864 with 118 people. As a result of the rural exodus that began in 1870 , the Jewish community was officially dissolved in 1920 and the remaining members of the Bretten Jewish community were assigned. The Jewish community of Diedelsheim had belonged to the Bretten district rabbinate since 1827 . She buried her dead in the Jewish cemetery in Obergrombach .

The Jewish community owned a synagogue , a religious school and a ritual bath ( mikveh ) in the synagogue building. At times, a religion teacher was employed who was also active as a prayer leader and schochet . The Jewish families lived from trading in cattle, local products and goods of all kinds.

synagogue

Initially there was probably only one prayer room, which was set up in one of the Jewish houses. On February 27, 1807, Samuel and Levi Moses bought the old Schildwirtshaus Zum Waldhorn from Christian Hurst for 520 guilders and in 1822 the Jewish community set up a synagogue and a ritual bath there.

After the dissolution of the Jewish community, the building at Schwandorfstrasse 13 (formerly Hauptstrasse 7) was bought by the community of Diedelsheim at auction on April 15, 1920. This set up a public bath in it . A workshop was set up in place of the public bathtub after 1945. After the building had been vacant for a long time, it was sold in 2010 to the owner of the inn opposite, who had it demolished and created a parking space on the property.

National Socialist Persecution

The memorial book of the Federal Archives lists 14 citizens born in Diedelsheim who fell victim to the genocide of the National Socialist regime .
