The Wallertheim Jewish cemetery is a Jewish cemetery in the Wallertheim community in the Alzey-Worms district ( Rhineland-Palatinate ). The cemetery on Wörrstädter Straße, approx. 300 m after leaving Wallertheim on the left side of the street, is a protected cultural monument.

history

A Jewish cemetery was established in Wallertheim as early as 1690. It was expanded around 1765 and closed around 1840 after the new cemetery was built. During the Nazi era , the cemetery was destroyed and cleared in 1940. This former cemetery on the Judensand was initially converted into arable land, but then lay fallow for decades. The plans to develop the area led to a dispute over disturbing the peace of the dead. In May 2014, the Higher Administrative Court of Rhineland-Palatinate in Koblenz refused to build on the cemetery property because of the eternal rest of the dead enshrined in the laws of Judaism .

The new cemetery was laid out around 1840 and occupied until the 1930s. The area of the cemetery is 8.24 ares. Today there are still about 40 tombstones ( mazewot ).
