history

A first Jewish cemetery was located between the city wall and today's upper Brunnenstrasse in the 18th century. The site was sold in 1919 and nothing is left of the cemetery today.

The dead of the Jewish community of Bechtolsheim were also buried in today's cemetery. The cemetery has an area of 10.80 ares and today there are still 46 tombstones ( mazewot ) from the 1880s. The last surviving tombstone was placed for Jakob Rüb, who died on February 19, 1935. The tombstones are in three rows on a concrete strip. These are mainly simple sandstones in mostly rectangular stelae shape, some with tracery and plants in relief. There is a high proportion of black hard stone from the last covering phase. A cemetery desecration is reported for the first time in 1935, the traces of the destruction are still visible today.
