Flonheim Jewish cemetery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jewish cemetery is located south of Flonheim in the middle of vineyards .

The Jewish cemetery was probably opened around 1830 in replacement of the inner-city burial ground in Backhausgasse. It has a quarry stone wall on two sides , and a gate with brick pillars and wrought iron wings in the east.

Around 60 gravestones ( Mazewot ), placed in rows , mainly made of Flonheim sandstone , from the middle of the 19th century to 1936 with partly bilingual, often weathered inscriptions can still be seen. The frequent arched ends have reliefs, e.g. B. neo-Gothic with tracery and also Levite jug . Next to it is a broken column. In the rear, last occupied section, there are some steles made of black-Swedish , a natural stone.

After the synagogue was demolished in 1979, the cemetery is the only remaining vivid testimony to the perished Jewish community in Flonheim.
