Jürgen Mathies (* 1960 in Wuppertal ) is a German police officer and has been State Secretary in the Ministry of the Interior of North Rhine-Westphalia since 2017 . Prior to that, he served as the police chief of Cologne from 2016 to 2017 .

Live and act

Mathies joined the police in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in 1977 . From 1980 he was initially employed in security at the Cologne Police Headquarters . From 1983 to 1987 he studied at the University of Applied Sciences for Public Administration and from 1992 to 1994 continued his training as a higher service with studies at the Police Leadership Academy in Münster .

Mathies held various management positions in the district police authorities in Siegburg and Cologne. From 1997 to 2003 and from 2006 to 2007 he was an operations officer and representative of the police inspector in the Interior Ministry of North Rhine-Westphalia . In between, in the period from 2003 to February 2006, Mathies performed the duties of a chief dean at the Cologne district government . As chairman of a nationwide project group, Mathies was responsible for the development of the police framework for the 2006 World Cup in Germany from January 2001 to 2006 .

From July 2007 to January 2016 he was the first director of the then newly founded State Office for Central Police Services in North Rhine-Westphalia in Duisburg . On January 19, 2016, he was introduced as the new police chief in Cologne by the North Rhine-Westphalian Minister for the Interior and Local Affairs Ralf Jäger . His predecessor Wolfgang Albers had come under fire in connection with the sexual assaults on New Year's Eve 2015/16 in Cologne and was put into temporary retirement on January 8, 2016 .

Jürgen Mathies served as Cologne police chief until June 12, 2017. On June 30, 2017, he was appointed State Secretary in the Ministry of the Interior of North Rhine-Westphalia by the newly elected Prime Minister Armin Laschet .

Jürgen Mathies is married and has two grown sons.
