John Carter Brown (art historian)

John Carter Brown III ( October 8, 1934 in Providence , Rhode Island , † June 17, 2002 in Boston ), known as J. Carter Brown , was an American art historian and historian .

Life

His father was the American politician John Nicholas Brown II . Brown attended Groton School in Massachusetts and studied history , literature, and art history at Harvard University , Harvard Business School, and New York University . From 1962 he worked for the National Gallery of Art. As successor to John Walker he was from 1969 to 1996 museum director of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC His successor as museum director was 1996 Earl A. Powell III . Brown was married to Constance Mellon Byers, a daughter of the US financial investor Richard King Mellon , from 1971 to 1973 . In his second marriage, he was married to Pamela Braga Drexel from 1976 to 1991. Brown had two children, John Carter Brown IV and Elissa Lucinda Brown.
