Jacob Bach , the Ruhlaer Bach (* 1655 in Wolfsbehringen near Eisenach , † 1718 in Ruhla ), was a German musician and cantor from the Bach family . He was the father of the composer and painter Johann Ludwig Bach .

Jacob Bach was the son of the farmer Wendel Bach (1617–1682), the youngest son of Philippus "Lips" Bach († 1620), another son of Veit Bach .

Johann Ludwig came from his first marriage to Anna Marthe Schmidt († 1677), whom he married in 1674. From his second marriage came Nicolaus Ephraim (1690-1760) and Georg Michael (1701-1771).

Career

His father Wendel recognized early on that his son was very talented. He was particularly noticeable for his quick comprehension. From 1669 Wendel Jacob attended the Latin school in Eisenach and from 1671 the Latin school in Gotha . There he was also instructed in playing instruments and in composition . At the age of 18 he fled to Mühlhausen with his lover Anna Marthe and married her there. He received further training from the city ​​organist , but as an apprentice he could not look after his wife. So she had to go back to her parents. Due to financial difficulties, Jacob joined the army of Duke Johann Georg I , but after a short time he bought himself free and took a job as a schoolmaster in Thal and brought his wife to live with him. She died in 1677. Jacob then worked as a schoolmaster in Steinbach and Wasungen until he was hired as a cantor in Ruhla . He made it possible for his son Johann Ludwig to have a good education and to study theology. He died in Ruhla in 1718.
