Jacob Becker (historian)

Jacob Becker , also Jakob Becker (born January 30, 1820 in Mainz , † December 3, 1883 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German high school teacher and antiquity researcher.

Jacob Becker attended high school in Mainz and then studied from 1838 to 1841 at the University of Giessen . In 1842 he became a grammar school teacher in Gießen, 1843 in Mainz, 1850 in Hadamar and from 1854 at the Selektenschule in Frankfurt am Main, of which he was director from 1871 until his death.

Becker researched and published primarily on antiquity and the Roman monuments of the Rhineland, especially his hometown Mainz ( Moguntiacum ) and Frankfurt ( Nida-Heddernheim ). From 1863 he was the editor of the Domblatt , which campaigned for the preservation of the Frankfurt Cathedral .
