Jacob Cornelis Mattheus Radermacher (* 1741 in The Hague ; † December 24, 1783 ) (also Jacobus Cornelius Matthaeus or Jacob Cornelis Matthieu , last name sometimes also Rademacher ) was a Dutch botanist and writer and a member of the Dutch East India Company . His botanical author abbreviation is “ Raderm. "

Life

He was the son of Johan Cornelis Radermacher (1700–1748), treasurer of the Princes of Orange and Susanna Ignatia van Schinne (1706–?), And the great-grandson of the humanist Johan Radermacher the Elder .

He himself joined the VOC as a merchant in 1757 and came to Batavia (today Jakarta ). In 1763 he returned to Holland to study law in Harderwijk . After successfully completing his studies, he settled in Arnhem on June 13, 1766 , but on December 20, 1766, he embarked again for Batavia. He began his career as an official in the East India Company. In 1776 he was appointed Raad Extraordinair of the Dutch East Indies and President of the College of Aldermen and in 1781 he became Raad Oordinair .

In 1783 he wanted to return to Europe for health reasons and became Vice Admiral of the fleet from Batavia to Holland. During the trip there was a mutiny in which he and his wife were killed on December 24, 1783.

On May 21, 1761 he married Margaretha Sophia Verijssel († 1781), daughter of Hugo Verijssel and Sophia Westpal (1722–1785) (after the death of Verijssel, she married the later Governor General Reinier de Klerk ).

Jacob Rademacher was very interested in the country's cultural development. He founded a Masonic Lodge in Batavia as early as 1762 . After returning from his studies in Holland, he started founding the Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen . A project that was successful in 1778. The company was initially based on his country estate.

He published numerous geographical and ethnographic works on the Dutch East Indies with descriptions of Borneo , Sumatra , Celebes , Flores , Sumbawa , Bali and Lombok . There is also a description of an earthquake in Japan on January 22, 1780.

During his time in Java and Sumatra he collected and described numerous plant species. After him, the genus Radermachera is Zoll. & Moritzi from the trumpet tree family (Bignoniaceae).
