Jacob Heinrich Kaltschmidt

Jacob Heinrich Kaltschmidt , also Jakob (* 1799 in Lübeck ; † January 31, 1872 in Leipzig ) was a German linguist and lexicographer .

Life

Kaltschmidt, whose father Johann Christoph Kaltschmidt was a brewer and organ and piano builder in the Beckergrube in Lübeck, visited the Katharineum in Lübeck until Easter 1822 . From the summer semester of 1822 he studied at the Universities of Rostock and Leipzig , first Protestant theology , then philology , and was awarded a Dr. Phil. PhD. From 1824 to 1831 he was a teacher at the grammar school in Chur .

In 1831 he came back to Leipzig and began the preparatory work for the publication of a concise, complete root and synonym dictionary of the German language from all its dialects and with all its foreign words . A first edition appeared in 1834 by Carl Christian Philipp Tauchnitz .

In 1835 he completed his habilitation at the University of Leipzig and worked briefly as a private lecturer , then as a language teacher and private scholar .
