Jacob Rothschild, 4th Baron Rothschild

Nathaniel Charles Jacob Rothschild, 4th Baron Rothschild OM , GBE (born April 29, 1936 in Berkshire ) is a British investment banker and member of the well-known Rothschild banking family . He is also Honorary President of the Institute for Jewish Policy Research .

Life

Jacob is the eldest son of Victor Rothschild, 3rd Baron Rothschild , and his first wife Barbara Judith Rothschild (née Hutchinson). Jacob Rothschild graduated from Eton College and then went to Christ Church College for a degree in history, tutored by Hugh Trevor-Roper .

From 1963 Rothschild worked for NM Rothschild & Sons , the family's bank in London , until he resigned in 1980: his father had decided to pursue an academic career and left the bank to his cousin Sir Evelyn de Rothschild . Jacob sold his stake in the bank but took control of the Rothschild Investment Trust (now RIT Capital Partners PLC ), an investment trust listed on the London Stock Exchange .

Together with Sir Mark Weinberg, Jacob Rothschild founded the J. Rothschild Assurance Group (now St. James's Place Wealth Management) in 1991 .

Jacob Rothschild is also a councilor for the Duchy of Cornwall and was a member of the Blackstone Group's international advisory council until 2008 .

From November 2003 to 2008 he was Deputy Head of BSkyB Television and until 2008 headed the US subsidiary RHJ International .

Jacob Rothschild is at Genie Energy Ltd. involved, which was granted the right to search for oil in the Syrian Golan Heights in 2013 . On October 7, 2015, Genie Energy announced that they had found a large oil deposit through test drilling. Other investors include former US Vice President Dick Cheney , hedge fund manager Michael Steinhardt , media entrepreneur Rupert Murdoch , former CIA director James Woolsey , former US Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers and Bill Richardson .

In 2017 he was elected as an honorary foreign member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Rothschild is a diverse patron in the United Kingdom , particularly in the arts.

From 1985 to 1991 he was Chairman of Trustees of the National Gallery . He was also personally involved in the restoration of Somerset House . In 1988 Rothschild inherited larger lands in Buckinghamshire from his aunt Dorothy de Rothschild . This gave rise to a special relationship with the Waddesdon Manor located on it , which had long been owned by the Rothschild family. He supported the renovation of the property with large donations.

Together with John Sainsbury, Baron Sainsbury of Preston Candover , Rothschild founded an association to promote the excavation and preservation of the ancient ruined city of Butrint in what is now Albania, of which he is still chairman. The archaeological site is close to his favorite holiday destination, Corfu .

Private life

Rothschild married Serena Mary Dunn, a granddaughter of the Canadian financier Sir James Dunn , in 1961 and they have four children:

  • Emily "Emmy" Magda Rothschild Freeman-Attwood (* 1967), ⚭ Julian David Warren Freeman-Attwood (* 1953). You have two children:
    • Ivy Antarctica (* 1999) and
    • Lily Tibet (* 2002).
  • Nathaniel Philip Rothschild (* 1971).

Nobility

In 1990, when his father died, he inherited the title of 4th Baron Rothschild and 5th Baronet , of Grosvenor-place. On December 31, 1997, he was beaten to the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire .
