Jacopo Passavanti
Jacopo Passavanti (born around 1302 in Florence ; died June 15, 1357 there ) was an Italian Dominican friar and writer .
His collection of penitential sermons and small moral tracts, the Specchio della vera penitenza (“Mirror of True Penitence”), which was conceived as a manual for laypeople , was first published in 1856 in a more modern edition by Filippo Luigi Polidori (1801 –1865) and has found a permanent place in the history of Italian language and literature , as does Boccaccio's contemporary Decameron , both valuable sources for the history of the religious spirit and the customs of this century. Ginetta Auzzas received a critical edition in the series Scrittori italiani e testi antichi (Firenze, Accademia della Crusca, 2014).
The Dominican order sent him to Paris in 1330 to study , then he studied philosophy in Pisa and theology in Siena and Rome .
Passavanti created the first draft for the Certosa di Firenze , supervised the building project of the Palazzo Acciaiuoli and, as prior of Santa Maria Novella, completed the dome of the Gothic church and monastery complex in Florence.
The Dominican Library of Santa Maria Novella ( Biblioteca Domenicana di Santa Maria Novella 'Jacopo Passavanti' ) is named after him today.
