Jacques Pellen (born April 1957 in Brest , Finistère department ; † April 21, 2020 there ) was a French jazz guitarist and composer .

Live and act

Pellen, who received his first guitar lessons at the age of twelve, completed a classical music education; after his university studies he worked as a freelance musician. Already in the 1970s there was a collaboration with the Breton singer Mélaine Favennec and the harpist Kristen Noguès . Through the guitarist Dan Ar Braz he came to a new interpretation of the musical tradition of Brittany . In 1979 he founded a guitar duo with Bruno Nevez, which developed into a quartet with François Daniel and Peter Gritz .

With guest musician Kenny Wheeler , he recorded the Celtic Procession , which he had composed, for the first time in 1989 ; In 1996 Sorserez was established u. a. with Riccardo Del Fra . In 1996 he founded the guitar trio "PSG" with Soïg Sibéril and Jean-Charles Guichen . With Paolo Fresu and Erik Marchand he formed the Trio Condaghés in 1998 . Musically, Pellen moved in the area of ethno-jazz , folk and Celtic music .

Pellen also composed for the pianist Jean-Marie Machado and took part in Dan Ar Braz's project L'Héritage des Celtes . He lived in Portsall, Ploudalmézeau parish . Pellen died in April 2020 after a three-week hospital stay at the age of 63 from the effects of COVID-19 .
