Jakob Ludwig Salomon Bartholdy (born May 13, 1779 in Berlin , † July 27, 1825 in Rome ) was a Prussian diplomat.

Jakob Ludwig Salomon was the son of the Berlin banker Jehuda Levin Salomon (1738–83) and his wife Bella Itzig (1749–1824), a daughter of the Prussian court factor Daniel Itzig and Mirjam Wulff (1727–1788). His sister Lea Mendelssohn Bartholdy was the mother of the composer Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel , the composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy , the singer Rebecka Mendelssohn Dirichlet and the banker Paul Mendelssohn Bartholdy .

From 1796 he studied law in Halle , Erlangen and Königsberg , whereupon he then devoted himself to more general studies. From 1801 he stayed in Paris for several years , then toured Italy and, together with the archaeologist Georg Christian Gropius, Greece . He described his impressions in his book Fragments for closer knowledge of today's Greece (Berlin 1805). In 1805 he became a Protestant in Dresden and took - like his widowed mother before - the family name Bartholdy in place of the original name Salomon (which now became his third first name).

In 1809, in the fifth coalition war against Napoleon , Bartholdy fought on Austria's side as a first lieutenant in the Vienna Landwehr. He reports about this time in his work The War of the Tyrolean Country People in 1809 (Berlin 1814).

In 1813 Bartholdy was employed in the office of State Chancellor von Hardenberg , accompanied him to Paris in 1814, to London in 1815 and to the Congress of Vienna . On the way he made the acquaintance of Cardinal Ercole Consalvi , with whom he remained in contact and whose biography he wrote (Stuttgart 1824).

In 1815 he became the Prussian consul general in Rome . In 1818 he attended the Aachen Congress and, as a secret legation councilor, was also chargé d' affaires at the Tuscan court in Florence.

Retired in 1825, he died on July 27 of the same year in Rome and was buried in the Protestant cemetery near the Cestius pyramid .

Bartholdy was best known as an art connoisseur. In 1815 he had a room in the Palazzo Zuccari rented by him decorated with frescoes by Peter von Cornelius , Friedrich Overbeck , Wilhelm von Schadow and Philipp Veit on the story of Joseph. The frescoes of the "Casa Bartholdy", which were sold by the Zuccari family to the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin in 1867 , are considered a major work of Nazarene art . In 1904 the patron Henriette Hertz acquired the palace; today the Bibliotheca Hertziana is located here .

Salomon Bartholdy's valuable collection of Etrurian vases, bronzes , ivory and majolica pictures etc. was acquired for the Altes Museum in Berlin.
