Life

Jakob Schaefer was the son of Johannes Schaefer and his wife Elisabeth, née Hennier. In 1919 he became a member of the KPD and was later chairman of the KPD local group and city councilor in Bad Nauheim . In June 1921 he married Cäcilie ("Cilly") Tannenberg , who later also became a member of the KPD state parliament. He worked as a tailor in Bad Nauheim and belonged to the Hessian state parliament for the KPD from 1927 to 1931. Since after the RFB ban in June 1929 he and his parliamentary group colleague Hermann Sumpf demonstratively went to the state parliament in the uniform of the Red Front Fighter League , he was excluded from the plenary sessions for four days.

In June 1933 Schaefer was arrested and taken into " protective custody " in the Osthofen concentration camp . After his release he left Bad Nauheim with his wife , moved to Marburg and worked as a house tailor from 1934. After July 20, 1944 , Schaefer was arrested again and taken to Sachsenhausen concentration camp . In spring 1945 he was liberated on the death march to Mecklenburg .

In 1945 he again became a member of the KPD Hessen and city councilor in Marburg. Together with his wife, he belonged to the Marburg Association of Victims of the Nazi Regime (VVN-BdA eV). After the KPD ban in 1956, the Schaefer couple became involved in the German Peace Union , and in 1968 both joined the German Communist Party (DKP). Jakob Schaefer died in 1971 during a spa stay in the ČSSR. In Marburg the now defunct party house of the DKP was named after Jakob and Cäcilie Schaefer.
