Jakob Schmidt (church historian)

Jakob Wilhelm Schmidt (born June 23, 1871 in Ober-Mörlen ; † January 1, 1964 ) was a German Catholic church historian , cathedral capitular and professor at the Mainz seminary.

Life

After finishing school, Jakob Schmidt studied at the Mainz seminary . He was ordained a priest on March 27, 1897. Initially, he worked as a chaplain at the St. Emmeran's Church in Mainz . Schmidt then moved to the Church of St. Ludwig in Darmstadt . In 1898 he returned to Mainz, where he became an assistant at the seminary. Three years later he became secretary to Bishop Heinrich Brück of Mainz . Under him he learned a lot about church history and through him he became one of the most famous church historians and church writers between Cologne and Mainz. Significant works from this period included "The Catholic Restoration of the former Kurmainzer Dominions Koenigsstein and Rieneck " (1902), "The Archbishops of Mainz and the Holy See" (1911), the textbook "Fundamentals of Church History" (1925) and the with Gerhard Rauschen and Jakob Marx written work "Illustrierte Kirchengeschichte". From October 1, 1902, he became a lecturer at the Mainz seminary. On April 16, 1904, he finally received his habilitation and became a professor. In 1906 he became head of economics at the Mainz seminary. Four years later he was appointed professor of canon law . In 1924 he became cathedral chapter and two years later an official .

In a commemorative publication on his 80th birthday in 1951, Ludwig Lenhart called him a " Nestor in Mainz Church History ". 1954 he was the theological faculty of the University of Mainz , the honorary doctorate awarded. In 1956 he retired at the age of 85 . A year later he also resigned as canon and all other ecclesiastical administrative offices. He now lived out his commitment to the interests of church history in private. In 1962 he was also awarded an honorary doctorate by the theological faculty of the University of Münster on his 60th anniversary as a doctor for his special academic and scientific merits. On this occasion, the professor for dogmatics and later Cardinal from Mainz, Hermann Volk, came to Schmidt from Münster.

Jakob Schmidt finally died on New Year's 1964 at the old age of 92. He was buried in the cathedral cemetery of Mainz Cathedral .
