Jacob of Lorraine
Jacob of Lorraine († October 24, 1260 ) was Bishop of Metz from 1239 until his death .
Life
Jacob came from the Châtenois family , who were the dukes of Lorraine . His parents were Friedrich II , Duke of Lorraine and Agnes von Bar , a daughter of Theobald I , Count of Bar . Jacob became Primicerius of the cathedral chapters of Metz and Verdun , was archdeacon of Toul and Trier and from 1230 to 1237 provost of Saint Lambert in Liège. He was elected bishop by the Metz cathedral chapter in January 1239 and was ordained bishop on March 20, 1239. Jakob tried to secure and expand the episcopal property, which he tried to defend by building and expanding the fortifications in Épinal , Saarburg and Rambervillers . He founded a monastery in Vic-sur-Seille , as well as collegiate churches in Saarburg and Homburg and promoted the orders, especially the mendicant orders . In the dispute between the Hohenstaufen emperor Friedrich II and the Pope, he supported the opposing kings Heinrich Raspe and Wilhelm von Holland . After his death, Jacob was buried in the Saint Nicholas chapel in Metz Cathedral.
