Willy Hoffmann (diplomat)

Willy Hoffmann (born December 5, 1925 in Lobstädt ; † 1990 ) was a German diplomat . He was the GDR's ambassador in the Netherlands .

Life

Hoffmann, son of a working-class family, was a sailor in the merchant or navy . After the Second World War he worked in local state organs until 1959 and became a member of the SED . He graduated from the Institute of Social Sciences of the Central Committee of the SED and his doctorate in May 1964 for Dr. phil.

In 1964 he joined the diplomatic service of the GDR. Among other things, he was Sector Head for Italy and Deputy Head of Department Western Europe in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the GDR (MfAA). 1967/1968 he was first secretary, from 1969 to 1971 councilor at the GDR embassy in Bucharest . From 1975 to 1978 he was counselor in Rabat (Morocco), then again sector head in the MfAA. From May 1981 to March 1982 he worked as ambassador in The Hague . In 1982 he left the diplomatic service.
