Bishop Jakub Zadzik

Jakub Zadzik (* 1582 in Drużbin ; † March 17, 1642 in Bodzentyn ) was bishop of Kulm with his seat in Chełmża (from 1624).

Life

He was also deputy chancellor of the Polish crown (from 1627), grand chancellor (from 1628 to 1635), bishop of Kraków (from September 17, 1635) and member of the Szlachta , diplomat and magnate of Poland-Lithuania .

In 1626 he gathered the Sejm in Toruń to collect taxes for the war against Sweden and set up a committee to reform the military coffers. He also negotiated the Treaty of Altmark in 1629 , the Treaty of Stuhmsdorf in 1635 , which ended the war with Sweden, and the Perpetual Peace of 1634 with Russia, which ended the Russo-Polish War (from 1632 to 1634).

As a devoted Catholic, he was a supporter of the Counter Reformation . In 1638 he succeeded in closing a Socinian Rakov academy . He was often in opposition to Władysław IV. Wasa , especially with regard to his attempts to assert claims to the Swedish throne and to strengthen the forces of the monarchy through military action. Zadzik supported the construction of the Krakow Bishop's Palace in Kielce, which lasted from 1637 to 1641 and which is now a museum.
