Jakub z Sienna Herb Dębno (* 1413 in Sienno ; † October 4, 1480 in Łowicz ) was a Polish nobleman and as such the Bishop of Cracow (1461-1463), Bishop of Włocławek (1464-1474) and the Archbishop of Gniezno as well Primate Poloniae (1474-1480).

Life

Jakub z Sienna grew up in a Polish noble family and studied law and theology in Rome . From 1435 he was canon of the Krakow diocese and secretarius regius (royal secretary) of the Polish-Hungarian king Władysław III. and then the Polish-Lithuanian King Kazimierz IV Jagiellończyk , involved in diplomatic missions in Hungary in 1442 and in Rome in 1448. After the death of Cardinal Zbigniew Oleśnicki , who was his nephew, Jakub z Sienna became administrator of the Diocese of Krakow. In 1459 he represented the king at the Congress in Mantua , where a revival of the crusade against the Ottoman Empire , which had failed in 1444 with the Battle of Varna , was discussed.

On November 24, 1460 Pope Pius II appointed Jakub z Sienna bishop of Krakow. Unfortunately, the king had other plans and asked for Jan Gruszczyński to be appointed bishop of Kraków. The new bishop was ordained on May 31, 1461 in the Pińczów Palace . The conflict with the king threatened to escalate when Pope Pius II threatened in his bull of June 2, 1461 with a curse if he did not recognize Bishop Jakub z Sienna. The king in turn condemned the Pope with a ban. Finally, on January 16, 1462, Pope Pius II handed the case over to the diocesan administration and the papal legate Hieronim Lando was summoned to Krakow to settle the whole conflict. In January 1463 in front of the Sejm in Piotrków Trybunalski , Jakub z Sienna humiliated himself before the king and resigned his Kraków bishopric. Pope Pius II assured him a high compensation and made him Bishop of Włocławek in March 1465 . In the same year Jakub z Sienna represented the king during the talks with the German Crusaders in Toruń at the end of the Thirteen Years' War and signed the Second Peace of Toruń in 1466 . In Włocławek and Gniezno he founded the choir stalls of oak and precious liturgical equipment. He was buried in a chapel of the Arch-Cathedral of Gniezno . There he had also donated the Christian cross on the arched beam of the cathedral.

His son Dobiesław z Oleśnicy Herb Dębno († 1440) was the Voivode of Sandomierz .

The brothers of Jakub z Sienna were:

  • Jan z Sienna (2nd half of the 15th century) was the castellan of Lwów

  • Mikołaj z Sienna († 1484) was Archdeacon of Sandomierz
