James Carville was born the oldest of eight children and grew up in the village of Carville ( Iberville Parish ), Louisiana , which was named after his grandfather. As a member of the Cajun ethnic group , he is of French descent. His father, a former major in the US Army , worked as a postal clerk, and his mother sold encyclopedias in her home region as a traveling salesman .

Carville studied law at Louisiana State University . Before going into politics, he worked as a prosecutor for a Baton Rouge law firm from 1973 to 1979 . Carville served two years in the United States Marine Corps , earned the rank of corporal and a high school teacher. Also known as Ragin 'Cajun , Carville is considered an effective Democratic Party official . Prior to joining the Clinton Campaign , Carville had some formidable political achievements with Paul Begala , including the Senate victory of Harris Wofford and the victories of Zell Miller and Robert P. Casey . In 1992, he gained national recognition for his work as a strategist in Bill Clinton's successful presidential campaign ( David Wilhelm was the campaign manager). Bill Clinton managed to win the presidential election against George Bush Sr. to achieve. In 1993, Carville was named Campaign Manager of the Year by the American Association of Political Advisors . The decisive factor was his work on Clinton's "War Room" at Clinton's headquarters in Little Rock , which was documented in the report " The War Room ". The report was nominated for an Academy Award . The phrase The economy, stupid , which he used in this campaign, entered common parlance. It came from a list he had posted in the campaign office to help him and his staff. There were three items on the list:

  1. Change versus moving on. (Change vs. more of the same)
  2. The economy, stupid. (The economy, stupid)
  3. Don't forget about health care. (Don't forget health care)

He was a media commentator during the Clinton's reign. Since then, Carville had stopped working for national campaigns because he feared it would cause an undesirable public. Instead, he worked abroad, including for British Prime Minister Tony Blair , for Ehud Barak of the Israeli Labor Party and for the Liberal Party in Canada . Carville was one of the moderators of the CNN telecast Crossfire , which was discontinued in June of 2005. Carville has a heavy Southern accent that, along with his quick and fiery rhetoric, made him a charismatic campaign manager for political underdog candidates. Carville became active again in the United States when he for the presidential 2004 campaign of John Kerry worked, which, however, failed.

Bestselling author

Carville is also a best-selling author and co-author. With his wife, Republican Mary Matalin , Carville wrote All's Fair: Love, War and Running for President . He later wrote We're Right, They're Wrong: A Handbook for Spirited Progressives and The Horse He Rode In On: The People vs. Kenneth Starr and Stickin. Suck Up, Buck Up ... and Come Back When You Foul Up , a book that Carville co-authored with Paul Begala. It includes detailed strategies to fight and win in business, politics, and life. In 2004, Carville's latest political book, Had Enough? out. He likes to include his favorite quotes in his books, but they don't always make sense in his context.

Acting career

In the film Old School , Carville makes a humorous guest appearance by playing himself as a wrestler at a college-level debate club meeting. Will Ferrell then gives a complex answer on US biotechnology policy. When Carville is asked to reply, he just says: "... We ... (stutters) have no answers. That was perfect ... "He also appears as a district attorney who prosecutes the title character in the film" Larry Flynt - The Naked Truth ", as well as Governor Thomas Theodore Crittenden in the western" The murder of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford " .

He also had a cameo appearance in the American cartoon series Family Guy , as an advisor in the election campaign of the protagonist Peter Griffin for the presidency in the parents' council. The appearance is less about his political and strategic sophistication than about his facial features (quote: “I can handle ugly, but this is like circus-ugly!” German: “I can deal with ugly people, but this guy is ready for the circus! ").

He had another brief appearance in the 2nd season of the American hit series 30 Rock in the episode "Lügen und Secrets"
