James Rollins (actually: James Paul Czajkowski; * 1961 in Chicago ) is an American veterinarian and writer. He became known for adventure thrillers such as Sub Terra , Operation Amazonas or Mission Arktis . He also publishes fantasy novels as James Clemens.

Life

After graduating from the University of Missouri with an undergraduate degree in evolutionary biology , Rollins graduated with a doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1985. He then moved to El Dorado County in California and opened a practice there.

On the side he tried to write short stories, none of which he could publish through a publisher. So he decided to write a novel. He resolved to write at least three double-spaced pages five days a week and finished his first book in less than a year. After the manuscript for Sub Terra had been accepted by the fiftieth publisher requested, it was published in 1999 as the first work under the pseudonym James Rollins.

Shortly before that, however, the novel Wit'ch Fire hit stores, which he was able to publish as James Clemens through Terry Brooks . Brooks had been one of the judges at the "Maui Writers' Conference Contest," for which Rollins submitted a manuscript completed on short notice.

For the next ten years, Rollins continued to work in his practice, writing at least one book a year. It was only when his work The Flame Sign had risen to number 2 on the New York Times bestseller list in 2009 that he sold his practice.

Influences

Even as a boy, Rollins was fascinated by the stories of Howard Carter and his discovery of the tomb of the ancient Egyptian pharaoh , King Tutankhamun . This story spurred him on to write the novel Excavation . It is about an archaeologist Henry Coklin and his nephew Sam, who discover a forgotten Inca city in the Andes . In this city they will find a treasure, but also a terrible curse.

Reading popular authors such as Edgar Rice Burroughs , Jules Verne or HG Wells contributed to the fact that he himself published contemporary novels filled with magic, horror effects and monsters.
