James Crabe
James Aubrey Crabe (born August 19, 1931 in Los Angeles , California - † May 2, 1989 in Sherman Oaks , California) was an American cinematographer .
Life
Crabe grew up as the son of a cartoon animator . He began his career as a cameraman in 1960 and subsequently worked on various television productions and smaller film projects. In 1970, he first worked on a feature film star-studded, in revenge out of jail seemed George Kennedy and Eli Wallach with in the lead roles. 1973 Save the Tiger received multiple Golden Globe and Oscar nominations , with lead actor Jack Lemmon earning an Oscar for best actor. Three years later, Crabe directed the camera for Sylvester Stallone's Rocky , who won three Academy Awards along with seven other nominations. That same year, Crabe received his first nomination of his own; for the television production The Entertainer with Jack Lemmon in the lead role he was nominated for an Emmy for best cameraman. Another Emmy nomination followed the following year.
One of the highlights of his career was 1981, when he was nominated for an Oscar. The thriller The Formula with Marlon Brando and George C. Scott received only this one Oscar nomination, but was nominated for four Golden Raspberries . In 1982 and 1984 Crabe received the Emmy for his television work. His feature films in the 1980s included the second part of the Police Academy film series and the first two films in the Karate Kid film series.
Crabe died at the age of 57 of complications from an AIDS illness.
