James Edward Oliver

James Edward Oliver (born July 27, 1829 in Portland , Maine , † March 27, 1895 ) was an American mathematician .

Oliver studied at Harvard College from 1846 and graduated in 1849. From 1850 he worked for the newly founded American Ephemeris and Nautical Almanac in Cambridge , Massachusetts . In 1870 he was appointed professor of mathematics at Cornell University in Ithaca , New York , where he lectured on a wide variety of mathematical fields and presented pioneering work on the relationship between probability theory and economics . He was also the co-author of several textbooks, including on algebra and trigonometry .

In 1861 Oliver was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , 1872 to the National Academy of Sciences , 1873 to the American Philosophical Society, and 1876 to the American Association for the Advancement of Science .

Oliver had been married to Sara Theresa Van Patten since 1888. In 1889/90 he spent 14 months in Europe, mainly with Arthur Cayley in Cambridge and Felix Klein in Göttingen . In early 1895, Oliver fell seriously ill and died after ten weeks of illness. His grave is in Pine Grove Cemetery in Lynn , Massachusetts .
