James W. Gerard

James Watson Gerard (born August 25, 1867 in Geneseo , New York , † September 6, 1951 in Southampton , Long Island , New York) was an American diplomat and lawyer. From 1913 to 1917 he served as the United States Ambassador to Germany .

Life

Gerard graduated from Columbia University in 1890 and graduated from Columbia Law School in 1902. He then served for four years chairman of the Democratic campaign committee of New York County and served four years as a Major of the National Guard of the State of New York .

In 1908 he was appointed judge at the New York Supreme Court , which he held until 1911. In 1913 he was sent to Berlin as the United States Ambassador . He succeeded John George Alexander Leishman .

During his work abroad, the chairman of the translated Democratic Party in the state of New York in the National Convention in 1914 the nomination Gerards as candidates for the office of senator for the state in Congress by. In the pre-party vote, Gerard prevailed against the then Secretary of State in the Naval Ministry Franklin D. Roosevelt . In the subsequent election, however, Gerard lost to his Republican competitor.

In 1917 Gerard returned to the States on the occasion of the American entry into World War II .

The George H. Doran Company of New York City published two souvenir books in which he reports on his experiences in Germany: "My Four Years in Germany" (1917) and "Face to Face with Kaiserism" (1918).
