James Whelan (Bishop)

James Whelan OP (born June 8 (uncertain) 1823 in Scaehan , County Kilkenny , Ireland , † February 18, 1878 in Zanesville , Ohio , USA ) was Bishop of Nashville .

Life

James Whelan joined the religious order of the Dominicans in and put on 29 June 1840, the perpetual profession from. He received on August 2, 1846 sacrament of Holy Orders .

On January 28, 1859, Pope Pius IX appointed him . the titular bishop of Marcopolis and ordered him to Coadjutor Bishop of Nashville. The Archbishop of Saint Louis , Peter Richard Kenrick , donated him episcopal ordination on May 8 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Vicar Apostolic of Kansas , John Baptiste Miège SJ , and the Bishop of Alton , Henry Damian Juncker . On February 21, 1860, James Whelan became Bishop of Nashville, succeeding the late Richard Pius Miles .

On September 23, 1863, James Whelan resigned as Bishop of Nashville and Pope Pius IX. appointed him on February 12, 1864 titular bishop of Diocletianopolis in Palestine .
