Jan Bjedrich Fryco (also Jan Bjedrich Fryzo , German Johann Friedrich Fritze ; born September 20, 1747 in Kolkwitz , Niederlausitz ; † January 15, 1819 ibid) was a Lower Sorbian Protestant pastor . He was the first to translate the Old Testament into Lower Sorbian .

Life

Jan Bjedrich Fryco was born the son of a pastor in Kolkwitz and was a brother of Pomgajbog Kristalub Fryco . After attending grammar schools in Cottbus and Lübben , he studied Protestant theology in Halle / Saale . There he also worked as a teacher at the school of the orphanage of the Francke Foundations .

From 1769 he was subdeacon and rector of the city school in Vetschau . In 1773 he became pastor in Kahren , in 1778 in Kolkwitz and Gulben . In 1791 Fryco finished the translation of the Old Testament into Lower Sorbian, which appeared in print in 1796. In 1808 he went into retirement.

Tombstone

He is buried in the church cemetery in Kolkwitz, where there is a tombstone of his. In the church there is an exhibition about his life and work (Johann-Friedrich-Fritze-Museum).

He also wrote some songs. In addition, some sermons and letters from Jan Bjedrich Fryco have survived.
