Jan Grabowski (born June 24, 1962 in Warsaw ) is a Polish historian who teaches in Canada .

Life

Jan Grabowski is the son of a Jewish Holocaust survivor and a Roman Catholic mother. He studied history at the University of Warsaw and received a master's degree there in 1986 . He received his PhD from the University of Montreal in 1994 . Grabowski has since taught at the University of Ottawa , where he received a professorship. He also works at the Centrum Badań nad Zagładą Żydów (Center for Holocaust Research ) of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences .

Grabowski researches the Holocaust in German-occupied Poland . His research shows that during the German occupation parts of the Polish population were more involved in the persecution of Polish Jews than was perceived by Polish historical policy in post-war Poland. In 2014 he received an award from Yad Vashem .

In 2016 he asked about the opening of the “Muzeum Polaków Ratujących Żydów podczas II wojny światowej im. Rodziny Ulmów w Markowej “( Museum in Markowa for the Poles who saved Jews during World War II ). The question of what role the local policeman Włodzimierz Leś of the Polish Police in the Generalgouvernement played in the denunciation had been left out of the historical research . After all, he was later shot by the Polish resistance because of his collaboration.

Grabowski was personally threatened in 2017 for his publications and also attacked in an open letter to the University of Ottawa signed by over a hundred Polish academics. The letter campaign came from the national Polish organization “Reduta Dobrego Imienia - Polska Liga Przeciw Zniesławieniom” ( Protection of the Good Name - Polish League Against Defamation ).
