Jan Helms

Jan Helms (born March 3, 1937 in Kiel ) is a German physician and former university professor for ear, nose and throat medicine.

Life

Helms' father ran an ENT practice in Lüchow (Wendland) . He studied medicine at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen and the Philipps University of Marburg . In 1957 he became active in the Corps Franconia Tübingen . He was medical assistant to Hans Erhard Bock . With the intention of becoming an internist, he worked for two years in the Marburg biochemistry . He came to ear, nose and throat medicine through a friend of his father’s colleague in Hamburg . With Henning Hildmann, he went through from 1967 with Dietrich Plester at the University Hospital Tübingenthe ENT medical training. In 1974 he completed his habilitation. In 1976 he was appointed to the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz as a private lecturer . In 1987 he switched to the chair at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg . He worked with the neurosurgeons , in Mainz with Madjid Samii , in Würzburg with Karl-August Bushe and Klaus Roosen . He was particularly concerned with cochlear implants . In 1996 he was accepted as a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . In 2005 he retired .
