Jan Kazimierz Denhoff (born June 6, 1649 in Warsaw , † June 20, 1697 in Rome ) was a cardinal , diplomat of the Polish King John III. Sobieski and Bishop of Cesena .

Life

His parents were Theodor Denhoff and Katharina Franziska Countess von Besse , his godfather was the cardinal priest and later King of Poland John II Casimir .

Jan Kazimierz Denhoff learned the basis of his upbringing at the Jesuit college in Pułtusk and completed his studies in Paris . He was a canon in Gniezno and archdeacon in Warsaw before being taken over by King John III. Sobieski was sent to Rome to be served by Pope Innocent XI. (1676–1689) to demand more active participation in the league against the Turks .

The Pope gave him various positions within the Roman Curia , including the Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signature . He was Minister for Poland of the Holy See. Pope Innocent XI. elevated him to cardinal in the consistory of September 2, 1686, after which he was installed as cardinal priest of San Giovanni a Porta Latina . Appointed bishop of Cesena on November 10, 1687 , Denhoff was ordained bishop on December 14, 1687 by the Cardinal Bishop of Sabina , Carlo Pio di Savoia , co- consecrators were Odoardo Cibo , titular archbishop of Seleucia in Isauria and Prospero Bottini , titular archbishop of Myra .

Cardinal Denhoff participated in the conclaves of 1689 and 1691 .
