Jan Rune Grave completed his first international race in 1996. In 1998 he made his debut in the B-World Cup in Nordic Combined . There he started regularly in the following years. In the 2000/01 season he won a sprint race in Taivalkoski, Finland, and the overall ranking of the B World Cup.
On November 23, 2001 he made his debut in the Nordic Combined World Cup at a Gundersen competition that took place in Kuopio . His best result in this competition series, he scored on 9 January 2002 in the Italian Val di Fiemme , as he and Kristian Hammer and Preben Fjære Brynemo finished sixth in the team competition. In individual competitions, seventh place, which he was able to achieve four days earlier in Schonach , is his best result.
Grave participated in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City . Here he finished fifth in the team competition together with Lars Andreas Østvik , Sverre Rotevatn and Hammer. In the individual competitions he did not get past places 24 (Gundersen competition on the normal hill) and 26th (sprint on the large hill).
