Jan Štursa (born May 15, 1880 , in Nové Město na Moravě , Bohemia , † May 2, 1925 in Prague ) was a Czech sculptor .

Life

Birth and teaching

Jan Štursa was born in the mountainous area of Vysočina . He learned masonry and sculpture in Hořice and then worked as a stonemason. He later studied at the Prague Art Academy with the sculptor Josef Myslbek . As a result of the very severe criticism from Myslbek, Štursa destroyed most of the works.

Topics and materials

Štursa was not influenced by the Czech Revival , like other sculptors, he found his own way. In addition to stone and bronze , he also used plaster of paris and wax . Later he was influenced by Cubism . He also engaged in portrait painting .

Time of the First World War

Participation in the First World War had a strong influence on Štursa's work. The most famous work from this period is called "The Wounded".

The inspiration for the sculpture "The Burial of the Carpathians" was a photo of a Carpathian battlefield. The real sculptural group was recreated in Austrian uniforms in a WWI memorial of the victims in the 1920s and placed in the village of Předměřice nad Jizerou , copies were made in Místek and Nové Město na Moravě .

From 1922 to 1924, Štursa was the rector of the Prague Art Academy.

Štursa was at Syphilis ill and committed so in 1925 in his studio two weeks before his 45th birthday suicide .
