history

Little research has been done into the region up to the present day. So it is not possible to say exactly when the plains of the Janja settlement were settled. The oldest records show that Janja was mentioned at the beginning of the 18th century at the latest. At that time it was known as a place of significant commercial activity and a population of around 4,000.

At the time of the Ottomans it had the status of a kasaba , a settlement with an urban character. Then it was transformed into a nahija and later an ajnaluk . From 1867 to 1878 Janja was a mudirat , a so-called branch office and during the Ottoman period thus above the rank of a community. Since the occupation of Bosnia by Austria-Hungary in 1878 until 1961, Janja was an independent municipality with an area of 189 km² and was then united with the municipality of Bijeljina.

During the Bosnian War Janja was one of the first targets of the Yugoslav invasion and, like a large part of eastern Bosnia, went through ethnic cleansing against the non-Serbian population. Thousands, mostly Muslims, left Janja and live scattered across 55 countries. A large proportion of the internally displaced people slowly returned after 2000.

economy

Even in the days of Yugoslavia , Janja was known for its fertile fields and an important industrial location. Throughout history, agriculture has been the most important economic factor with an area of 14,000 hectares. Grain and various kinds of vegetables were grown in the fields. Like the entire Semberija region, Janja is known for growing vegetable cabbage . The inhabitants are therefore affectionately called kupusari .

In addition to the fertile soil, the area around Janja also has hydropower and gravel from the Drina river as the only natural raw materials.

Infrastructure

School system and education

Janja has a primary school.

Health system

There is a health center ( Dom zdravlja ) in the village and is used for first aid . All serious injuries and illnesses require admission to the health center and hospital in Bijeljina.

media

Janja is home to the FM Studio Janja 104.2 MHZ radio station .

traffic

Janja is located on the Bijeljina- Šepak - Zvornik road and is part of a transit area, especially for buses.

In the summer of 2012, a ferry for small vehicles and agricultural machines was installed at Janja across the Drina as a connection between Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia. This ferry enables faster transport from Janja across the Drina to Serbia than was previously the case.

Several regular buses run between Janja and Bijeljina every day. In addition, in the center of the settlement, in the so-called Čaršija , there are permanent taxis that go to Bijeljina, among other places. There are two international bus routes that connect Janja with Vienna : Semberija Trans and Viena Tours .

Sports

Football has been played in Janja since 1919. Janja is home to three football clubs: FK Podrinje Janja and OFK Janja 2009.

FK Podrinje Janja

The club was founded in 1919 and plays in the 1st division of the Republika Srpska . In the national context of Bosnia-Herzegovina, the club is second class. In the 96 years of existence, the club brought out several big names in Yugoslav football. Among others, Savo Milošević played , who wore the jersey of FK Partizan Belgrade , Aston Villa , Real Saragossa , FC Parma and Celta de Vigo ; The brothers Husref and Vahidin Musemić, who once caused a sensation nationally and internationally in the golden era of FK Sarajevo , at FK Podrinje Janja and started in the youth of the club and developed into well-known football players.
