Jawad Anani

Jawad Ahmad al-Anani ( Arabic جواد العناني, DMG Ǧawād al-ʿAnānī ; * June 28, 1943 in Halhul , Palestine ) is a Jordanian politician and economist .

Life

After attending school, Jawad Anani began an undergraduate degree at the American University in Cairo , which he completed in 1967 with a bachelor's degree . He then joined the Economic Research Department of the Central Bank of Jordan. He completed a postgraduate degree in economics at Vanderbilt University , which he started at the same time, with a master's degree in 1970 . On his return he was head of the foreign trade research department of the Central Bank of Jordan from 1971 to 1973. After that, he also earned a Doctor of Economics (1975 Ph.D. ) at the University of Georgia and acted upon his return from 1975 to 1977 as head of the Economic Research Department of the Central Bank of Jordan. In 1977 he moved to the Ministry of Labor, where he was Undersecretary for Social Security until 1977.

In the cabinet of Prime Minister Abdelhamid Sharaf, Anani held the post of Minister for Supply between 1979 and 1980 and was then Minister of Labor in the second cabinet of Prime Minister Mudar Badran from 1980 to 1984 . In the subsequent cabinet of Prime Minister Ahmad Obeidat , he served as Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism between 1984 and 1985. After serving as director of the Collaborative Research Center from 1985 to 1986, between 1986 and 1989 he was President of the Royal Scientific Society founded by Prince Hassan ibn Talal in 1970 . Between 1991 and 1993 he was a member of the Jordanian delegation to the Madrid conference for a peace process in the Middle East to settle the Middle East conflict, and in 1993 he was a brief member of the board of directors of the Petra Bank, founded in 1956 by the Iraqi economist Ahmad al-Jalabi at the suggestion of Prince Hassan ibn Talal .

In 1993 Jawad Anani became a member of the Senate (Maǧlis al-Aʿyān) , the Upper House of Parliament ( Maǧlis al-Umma ) , and was a member of this until 2001. At the same time he became Minister of Information in 1993 in the first cabinet of Prime Minister Abdelsalam al-Majali and held this ministerial office until 1995. In the second cabinet of Prime Minister Abdelsalam al-Majali, he served as Deputy Prime Minister for Development between 1997 and 1988. He also took over the post of Foreign Minister from Fayez Tarawneh as part of a cabinet reshuffle on February 17, 1998, and held this post until he was replaced by Abdul Ilah al-Khatib on August 19, 1998. He then acted as head of the royal court between 1998 and 1999 and as such was the last to hold this office under King Hussein I , who died on February 7, 1999 .

Anani was President of the Economic and Social Council between 2012 and 2013 and, as such, was also involved in the Gulf Cooperation Council . He became a member of the Senate again in 2013. In the cabinet of Prime Minister Hani al-Mulki , he served as Vice Prime Minister for Economic Affairs between June 1, 2016 and January 15, 2017. He was also Minister for Industry, Trade and Supply from June 1 to September 28, 2016 and then Minister of State for Investments between September 28, 2016 and January 17, 2017.
