Jazz Club Minden

The Jazz Club Minden is a nationally known club in the East Westphalian city ​​of Minden in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Since 1987 it has been in the basement of the Weingarten Education Center at Königswall 97, the former Strothmann distillery. Around 40 concerts are held each year in the club rooms, which can accommodate around 250 visitors.

history

The Jazz Club Minden e. V. was founded on May 1st, 1953 by Christian Beermann and Günter Kunz, making it one of the oldest still existing German jazz clubs . Beermann and Kunz had just finished high school at the Besselgymnasium Minden and were fascinated by the new music. The idea of ​​the jazz club in Minden was promoted by the fact that Minden still had a larger British garrison at that time. It is carried out on a voluntary basis by a non-profit association (Jazz Club Minden eV), which has around 400 members. First chairman is Matthias Niemann, deputy chairman Hermann Schürmann.

Initially located in various cellars, the Jazz Club was located in Priggenhagen from March 1, 1974 until it moved to today's domicile in Königswall 97 in 1987.

Outside of its own premises, the club has been organizing a "Jazz Summer Night" on Minden's market square in July / August since 1982, which attracts between 5,000 and 10,000 spectators. In addition, the club held an annual gospel concert in the Martinikirche until 2010, and in the 1990s there was a series of events called “Mindener Jazz Spring”.

In 1992 the Jazz Club co-organized the Jazz Culture Days in Minden.

Awards

In 2003 the Jazz Club was awarded the Citizens' Prize of the City of Minden , which was accepted by the then chairman Hans-Joachim Rickert. In 2013 and 2018 the Jazz Club Minden was recognized for its "culturally outstanding live music program" and in 2013 received the German venue program award "Applaus" again from Minister of State Bernd Neumann and his successor Monika Grütters in 2018.

Guests

The catchment area of ​​the club's concerts extends beyond the major cities in the vicinity (Hanover, Osnabrück, Bielefeld). Musicians such as Randy Brecker , Klaus Doldinger , Diana Krall , Freddie Hubbard , Roy Hargrove , Bill Evans , George Duke , Paul Kuhn , Charlie Mariano , Dave Brubeck , Nils Landgren , Nat Adderley , Airto Moreira , Candy Dulfer , Charlie made guest appearances in the jazz club Hunter and Flora Purim .

Bebop legend Dizzy Gillespie gave his last concert in Europe in Minden in 1991.

Once a month there is an open jam session with mostly local musicians, led by a formation around Ansgar Specht. The Jazz Club also supports an in-house junior band under the name "Bandfabrik", which is headed by Klaus Merkel.
