Jean-François Joanny (born June 30, 1956 in Toulon ) is a French theoretical physicist who deals with soft matter and biophysics .

Joanny studied from 1975 to 1980 at the École normal supérieure of Paris (ENS). In 1978 he received his doctorate from Pierre-Gilles de Gennes ( Thèse de 3 ème cycle ) with a thesis on the mixture of polymers. 1985 followed the second part of the doctorate ( Thèse de doctorat ) with de Gennes ("Le mouillage: quelqueproblemèmes statiques et dynamiques"). In 1978/79 he was a post-doctoral student at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) and from 1980 he conducted research for the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) as a charge de research at the Collège de France , and from 1985 at the university Lyon I (Claude Bernard) and from 1987 at the École normal supérieure de Lyon . From 1989 to 2003 he was a professor at the University of Strasbourg , where he headed the research group Physics of Dispersions ( physique des milieux dispersés ) at the Institut Charles-Sadron (ISC) from 1995 to 1998 and was deputy head of the institute from 1996 to 2002. Since 2003 he has been a professor at the University of Paris VI (Pierre et Marie Curie) and also teaches at the École supérieure de physique et de chimie industrielles de la ville de Paris (ESPCI ParisTech).

He dealt with various soft matter phenomena such as polymer solutions, polymer adsorption, foams, emulsions, interfaces of liquids, wetting, thin liquid films, capillarity, soapskins, polymer gels and colloidal suspensions. Most recently, he has focused on applications in biology such as “molecular motors” and membranes, the cytoskeleton , cell migration and cell adhesion .

In 1985 he received the bronze medal and in 2008 the gold medal of the CNRS, in 2007 the science award of the Cino Del Duca Foundation (together with Jacques Prost and awarded by the Institut de France ), in 1993 the Paul Langevin award , in 2012 the Gentner Kastler award and in 2017 the Prix Ampère . Since 2006 he has been a member of the Institut universitaire de France . Since 2008 he has been on the scientific council of the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz.

From 2000 to 2005 he was editor of the “ European Physical Journal E”, from 1993 to 1997 he was co-editor of the “ Journal of Physics C” and from 1998 to 2001 of “ Europhysics Letters ” (EPL).

Jean-François Joanny is married and has four children.
