Jean-Marc Foltz

Jean-Marc Foltz (* 1968 in Strasbourg ) is a French clarinetist (also bass clarinet ) who is active in both contemporary music and jazz .

Act

Foltz completed a classical training on the clarinet and studied at the CNR / Conservatoire Strasbourg with Armand Angster . For more than ten years he belonged to the Ensemble intercontemporain and the Ensemble Accroche Note ; He also worked with the MusikFabrik NRW , the United Instruments of Lucillin Ensemble (Luxembourg) and Alternance (Paris) and interprets contemporary pieces by composers such as Georges Aperghis , Pierre Boulez , Pascal Dusapin and Giacinto Scelsi . He also played in the Orchester Régional de Jazz d'Alsace and Bernard Struber's Jazztett . Since 2001 he has worked in a duo and trio with Stéphan Oliva and Bruno Chevillon as well as with Raymond Boni , Joe McPhee and Latif Chaarani. He belonged to the Quintet Improvista and to Claude Tchamitchian's group Lousadzak . He has also given concerts with the pianist Bill Carrothers and the Trio de Clarinettes , with whom he also made recordings. In 2005 he founded his own trio with Sébastien Boisseau and Christophe Marguet , with whom he performed in Europe and Latin America and for which he also composes. In view of his album Gershwin , France Musique judged him: “Familiar with large breaks, as comfortable in the post-romantic repertoire, in contemporary music as in the most adventurous jazz, Jean-Marc Foltz is an independent multi-clarinetist, true to the pioneering approach of Michel Portal , who can conjure up new beauties from Gershwin's repertoire ”.

Foltz teaches at the Académie supérieure de musique de Strasbourg , the Académie Opus XXI and the CNSMD in Lyon.
