Jean-Pierre Urkia

Jean-Pierre Urkia MEP (born November 27, 1918 in Espelette , † December 21, 2011 in Montbeton ) was a French religious and missionary . He was Vicar Apostolic of Paksé from 1967 until his expulsion from Laos in 1976 .

Life

Jean-Pierre Urkia entered the seminary in Bayonne in 1935 and finished his studies in philosophy in 1937 and joined the religious order of the Paris Mission . When the Second World War broke out, he was a soldier in the 18th Infantry Regiment at the front in Lorraine and wounded on the Belgian border in 1940. He finished his theological studies in Paris and received on 26 June 1942 in the chapel of the Seminary of the Paris mission ordination . From 1942 to 1945 he was vicar in Champagne in a parish in the Diocese of Troyes, Bar-sur-Aube. After the war ended, Urika became chaplain of the 2nd regiment in the Central Region of Vietnam on January 16, 1946. In 1947 he left the army and joined his order in Saigon and was active in various missionary services in Indochina. In 1953 he worked in Laos as Vicar of the Siengvang, in the province of Thakhek. He learned the Lao Thakhek language. In 1956 he became pastor of Thangam and Siengvang. From 1960 to 1965 he built a seminary there.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on June 12, 1967 titular Bishop of Masclianae and appointed him Vicar Apostolic of Paksé . He was ordained bishop by the Vicar Apostolic of Savannakhet , Jean-Rosière-Eugène Arnaud MEP, on September 27th of the same year; Co - consecrators were Claude-Philippe Bayet , Bishop of Ubon and Michel-Auguste-Marie Langer MEP, Bishop of Nakhon Sawan .

With the communist takeover in 1975, Bishop Urkia had problems performing his office. On March 3, 1976, he was expelled from Laos. After a rest period in France, he took on pastoral work in Brazil in 1977 in the diocese of Umuarama in the state of Paraná . In 1977 he became pastor in Perola and in 1983 pastor of Santa Eliza. In 1989 he returned to France at the request of the superior general and took over the management of the religious house in Montbeton.
