Jean-Louis Borel (born April 3, 1819 in Fanjeaux , Département Aude , † February 20, 1884 in Versailles , Département Yvelines ) was a French Général de division and Minister of War.

Life

He attended the military school of Saint-Cyr from 1838-40 and then joined the General Staff as a lieutenant , in which he served under Mac-Mahon in Africa , in the Crimea and in Italy in 1859 , and in 1845 as captain , in 1855 as commandant and in 1867 as colonel advanced.

It was not until 1869 that he exchanged his position as Mac-Mahon's adjutant for the post of Chief of Staff of the National Guard of Paris . Therefore, he did not take part in the first fighting in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 , but after his promotion to Général de brigade in September, he became Chief of Staff of the Loire Army under Aurelle de Paladines , then the Eastern Army under Bourbaki , and in 1871 the Versailles Army under Mac-Mahon appointed.

Promoted to Général de division in 1871 , he was given command of a division in Reims , became a member of the Army Reorganization Commission, then Chief of Staff of the Military Governor of Paris and December 14, 1877, Minister of War in the Dufaure cabinet . But since his political attitude did not correspond to the wishes of the republican majority of the chamber, he was replaced by Gresley in January 1879 and appointed commander of the 3rd Army Corps in Rouen . He died on February 23, 1884.
