Jean Monod (born September 5, 1765 in Ambilly near Geneva , † April 23, 1836 in Paris ) was a French Reformed pastor and theologian from the Geneva Republic .

Live and act

Jean Monod was the son of Gaspard Joël Monod (1717–1782), a former pastor who was living as a translator and writer in Geneva at the time of his son's birth, and his wife Suzanne Puerani (1737–1799). He grew up in Geneva, where he studied theology from 1782 after finishing school. In 1785 he completed his studies with a dissertation on speaking in tongues and was ordained in 1787 and accepted into the Compagnie des pasteurs . During a trip to Copenhagen in 1790 he met Louise de Coninck (1775-1851), the daughter of the wealthy businessman of Huguenot origin, Frédéric de Coninck. He became engaged to her and married her on January 18, 1793. He then returned to Switzerland and worked as a pastor in Morges . In 1794, thanks to the influence of his father-in-law, he was called to pastor the French Reformed Church in Copenhagen. After the British bombing of Copenhagen in August / September 1807 had largely destroyed the city and ruined the Frédéric de Conincks company, Monod accepted an appointment to Paris, where he had already preached and made contacts during a visit in 1798. He received one of the three Reformed parish offices that Napoleon Bonaparte had set up in 1802, and worked at the Oratoire du Louvre, which had served as a Reformed church since 1811 . In order to be able to feed the large number of children, the family also ran a boarding school . After the death of Paul-Henri Marron on July 31, 1832, Monod took over his office as President of the Consistory of the Reformed Church of Paris. Monod fell ill in the winter of 1835/36 and died on April 23, 1836 at the age of 70. He was buried with great sympathy in the Père Lachaise cemetery .

Unlike his two more famous sons, Frédéric and Adolphe , who belonged to the revival movement , Jean Monod is attributed to the Enlightenment or to supranaturalism . In addition to some articles in Louis Gabriel Michaud's biography Universelle , he published only two sermons during his lifetime. 51 copies of the sermon are preserved in the archives of the Compagnie des pasteurs in Geneva. He also translated letters from the German theologian Franz Volkmar Reinhard . In the book Cent cinquante ans après in 1943, three descendants of Monod collected the correspondence between him and his wife.
