Jean-Toussaint Arrighi de Casanova , Duke of Padua (born March 8, 1778 in Corte , Corsica , † March 22, 1853 in Paris ), was a French general and politician .

Life

Arrighi, a relative of Napoleon Bonaparte , was educated at the military school in Rebais near Meaux , entered the army in 1796, accompanied Joseph Bonaparte as legation secretary to Rome in 1797 , then fought as captain in Egypt and was seriously wounded at St. Jean d'Acre . In the Battle of Marengo he was promoted to Chef d'escadron , in the Battle of Austerlitz to Colonel of the Dragons de la Garde impériale , and in the Battle of Friedland the Emperor promoted him to Général de brigade .

In 1808 he received the hereditary title of Duke of Padua and rich domains in Germany. In 1809 he fought as a general de division near Esslingen am Neckar and the battle of Wagram and in 1812 organized the cohorts formed from national guards to protect the French coasts from attacks by the English. In the spring of 1813 he became the commander of the 3rd Cavalry Corps of the Army, in May he became the governor of Leipzig, despite the armistice, had the Lützow Freikorps attacked by Fournier near Kitzen, took part in the unfortunate procession of Nicolas-Charles Oudinot against Berlin in August and then defended in the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig the suburbs.

Since then he has lived in complete seclusion on his country estate at Courson. In 1849 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Corsica and was one of the heads of the Bonapartist party. In November of that year he was appointed General Director of the Post by Louis Napoléon , after the coup d'état of December 2, 1851, a member of the Consultative Commission, in January 1852 a Senator, in December of that year he was appointed Governor of the Home for Disabled People.

His son Louis Arrighi de Casanova , Duke of Padua, was under Napoléon III. Interior minister.

His name is entered on the triumphal arch in Paris in the 21st column (ARRIGHI).
