Jeff Radebe
Jeffrey Thamsanqa "Jeff" Radebe (born February 18, 1953 in Cato Manor , Durban ) is a South African politician , was his country's Justice Minister and Minister and Vice Chairman of the National Planning Council in the presidential administration of Jacob Zuma . From 2018 to 2019 he was Minister of Energy ("Energy Minister").
Life
Jeff Radebe was born as the youngest of three children to Eleanor and Isaac Radebe. The father really worked as a driver in Durban. Between 1959 and 1962 he attended the Dukemini Lower Primary School and then the Isilimela Higher Primary School until 1966. He passed his matric in 1971 at the Isibonelo High School in KwaMashu . In 1972 Radebe founded the KwaMashu Youth Organization .
Radebe then studied law at the University of Zululand , where he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws in 1976. He then joined the African National Congress and was active in political work among students. During this time he worked as a lawyer in Durban . In 1977 he left South Africa at the behest of the ANC and was employed in Dar es Salaam ( Tanzania ) for two years as a journalist for the ANC broadcaster Radio Freedom .
Radebe has been studying international law since 1978 and in 1981 obtained a Master of Laws (LLM) from Karl Marx University in Leipzig ( University of Leipzig ). He was then employed between 1981 and 1982 as the deputy of the ANC representative in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania). Radebe moved to Lusaka as early as 1982 , where he was able to gain new professional experience in the international relations department at the ANC headquarters. In 1983 the ANC sent him to Lesotho to organize underground structures for the ANC and for the SACP in South Africa. He came in contact with Moses Mabhida , who had a great influence on him. In 1985 Radebe completed another study visit to Moscow at the party college of the CPSU VI Lenin .
Radebe received military training in Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK). He was arrested in Johannesburg in 1986 and sentenced to ten years imprisonment on Robben Island under the Terrorism Act of the apartheid regime of South Africa . After an appeal, the sentence was reduced to 6 years. In 1990 he was released after a twelve-day hunger strike .
In 1990 Radebe became deputy chairman of the ANC in its Southern Natal Region (1991 to 1994) and secretary of the SACP (1990 to 1991), after which he held various positions in the party's provincial administration. He was also the coordinator of the National Association of Democratic Lawyers (NADEL) from 1990 to 1991 .
Since 1991 he has been a member of the National Executive Committee and the National Working Committee of the ANC. After the 1994 general election , he became Minister for Public Works in the Mandela Cabinet . From 1999 to 2004 he was Minister for State Enterprises in Thabo Mbeki's cabinet . He then served as Minister of Transport from 2004 to 2009 and Minister of Justice from 2009 to 2014. In May 2014 Jacob Zuma appointed him to the presidential administration as Minister of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation . In 2018 he became energy minister, in 2019 he was no longer admitted to the Ramaphosa II cabinet .
Radebe is married to Bridgette Radebe, South Africa's first female mining entrepreneur and sister of mining tycoon Patrice Motsepe .
