Jeffrey N. Steenson

Jeffrey Neil Steenson (born April 1, 1952 in Camp Rucker , Dale County , Alabama) is a retired Anglican Bishop of the Episcopal Church of the United States of America . He was the 8th Bishop of Rio Grande from 2005 to 2007. He has been a Roman Catholic priest since 2009 . From 2012 to 2015 he was the first professor of the newly created staff ordinariate Kathedra Petri .

Life

Jeffrey Steenson received his Master of Divinity from Harvard Divinity School (1978) in New Testament, Master of Arts from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (1976) in Church history and Bachelor of Arts from Trinity International University (1974) in history. He received his PhD in Philosophy from the University of Oxford in 1983 with his dissertation entitled Basil of Ancyra and the Course of Nicene Orthodoxy . In June 1979, he was appointed deacon ordained and received on June 29, 1980 his ordination . From 1983 he worked as a curate at All Saints' Church in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania and as rector at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Rosemont and since 1989 at St. Andrew's Church in Grand Prairie , Texas. On January 16, 2005, he was ordained bishop by Terence Kelshaw , Mark Lawrence MacDonald and James Monte Stanton , after he was elected coadjutor bishop on October 16, 2004 . On August 1, 2005, he succeeded Terrence Kelshaw in the office of Bishop of Rio Grande. He married on March 16, 1974 and has three children with his wife Debra.

At the end of 2007 he joined the Roman Catholic Church, which is why he could no longer be Bishop of the Episcopal Church. Steenson was inducted into full communion with the Roman Catholic Church in a private ceremony on December 1, 2007 by Cardinal Bernard Francis Law at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore , Rome. He began studies at the Pontifical Irish College and the Pontifical Patristic Institute Augustinianum in Rome. He was also an adjunct professor at the University of Dallas on campus in Rome. He was ordained a deacon on December 13, 2008 by Cardinal Bernard Law. On February 21, 2009 he was ordained a Roman Catholic priest by Archbishop Michael Jarboe Sheehan ; he was incardinated in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe .

On January 1, 2012 he was appointed Ordinarius by Pope Benedict XVI with the title of Monsignor . based staff Ordinariate Chair of Peter ordered. He exercised this office without episcopal ordination, as celibacy dispensation for bishops is not possible. He was installed in his office on February 12, 2012 , Apostolic Protonotary and member of the United States Bishops' Conference .

Steenson teaches Ancient Church History in Houston at the University of St. Thomas (UST) and St. Marys Seminary. He is the Carl and Lois Davis Visiting Professor in Patristic Studies .

On November 24, 2015, Pope Francis accepted his resignation as full professor of the Kathedra Petri staff ordinariate.
