Steven Joseph Lopes (born April 22, 1975 in Fremont , California , USA ) is an American bishop and full professor of the staff ordinariate of Kathedra Petri .

Life

Steven Joseph Lopes is the son of a teacher couple. The father was a Portuguese who immigrated in the 1960s , the mother is a Detroit woman with Polish roots. He studied Catholic Theology at the University of San Francisco with a minor in Philosophy and German, and then entered St. Patrick's Seminary in Menlo Park , California . He spent an academic year at the Pontifical North America College in Rome and studied philosophy and liturgy at the University of Innsbruck . On June 23, 2001, he received the sacrament of ordination for the Archdiocese of San Francisco . It was consecrated by Archbishop William Joseph Levada , who was also born in California and whose grandparents also come from Portugal. Then Lopes was used as chaplain and parish vicar in various Californian parishes in pastoral care. A year after his ordination he returned to Rome and continued his theological studies at the Gregorian until he received his doctorate . Under William Levada, who was appointed Prefect of the Faith, Lopes worked from 2005 to 2012 as his assistant at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith , where he was already in charge of coordinating the three Benedict XVI. established staff ordinariates of the Anglican tradition. After Levada's resignation in July 2012, Lopes was appointed secretary of the papal Anglicanae traditiones commission, which prepared the missal Divine Worship: The Missal for Catholics of the Anglican tradition.

On 24 November 2015 it appointed Pope Francis to the professor of the Chair of Peter Personal Ordinariate and awarded him the episcopal dignity . The episcopal ordination took place on February 2, 2016 in the main church of the Ordinariate Our Lady of Walsingham in Houston by Gerhard Ludwig Müller with the assistance of William Joseph Levada and Donald William Wuerl . His motto is Magna opera Domini - “Great are the works of the Lord” ( Ps 111,2  EU ), a psalm quotation which he explains as an indication of his close connection with the ordinariate that existed before his appointment.

Lopes is an unmarried Roman Catholic cleric and not a convert from Anglicanism , so that, unlike the other previously appointed heads of the three personnel ordinariats ( Keith Newton , Jeffrey N. Steenson and Harry Entwistle ), he was also able to receive episcopal ordination, for which a celibacy dispensation was not available is possible.

As a full professor of the staff ordinariate, Lopes is a full member of the United States Bishops 'Conference (USCCB) and the Canadian Bishops' Conference (CECC).

In addition to English and Portuguese, he speaks Italian and German.
