Jeremiah James Harty (born November 5, 1853 in St. Louis , Missouri , † October 29, 1927 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American Roman Catholic clergyman. Harty was most recently Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Omaha .

Life

Jeremiah Harty, son of Andrew and Julia Harty, Irish immigrants, graduated from a Brothers School of Christian Schools and a Jesuit- run high school . He then enrolled at Saint Louis University , where he graduated in 1872. Most recently he studied theology at St. Vincent's College in Cape Girardeau , Missouri. On April 28, 1878 he was Archbishop Patrick John Ryan for ordained priests .

Harty began serving as a chaplain at St. Lawrence O'Toole Church in St. Louis. He also presided over the ward of St. Bridget Church before he became a charter member of the ward of St. Leo Church in 1888 .

Pope Leo XIII. it was who appointed Harty Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Manila in the Philippines on June 6, 1903 . The episcopal ordination that he received during a stay in Rome was donated to him on August 15, 1903 by Cardinal Francesco di Paola Satolli and his co-consecrators, Bishops Diomede Panici and Amilcare Tonietti . During Harty's 13-year tenure as Archbishop of Manila, he was exposed to strong pro-Protestant and equally loud anti-Catholic sentiment in the country. One of his greatest successes was the founding of the private University De La Salle in Manila in 1911 , which he realized with the support of the brothers of the Christian schools and the Vatican City .

On May 16, 1916, Pope Benedict XV ordered Harty as Archbishop of Omaha, Nebraska . During his tenure, the Catholic clergyman Edward J. Flanagan founded the youth welfare organization Girls and Boys Town , which Harty was initially skeptical of. He later admired Flanagan's achievements.

The American actor Minor Watson starred in the role of Archbishop Harty in the feature film Teufelskerle , which was filmed by Norman Taurog in 1938 and for which Spencer Tracy received the Oscar for his portrayal of Father Edward Flanagan .

Jeremiah Harty died in Los Angeles in late October 1927, shortly before his 74th birthday.
