Scheff grew up in Vallejo ( California on). After serving in the United States Navy , he went to San Diego State College , where he earned his living as a musician in hotel bands. When the hotel burned down on a tour in Palm Springs and all the instruments were destroyed, he decided to move to Los Angeles . There he worked as a studio musician .
In 1966, Scheff recorded their debut album And Then ... Along Comes the Association with the vocal group The Association . The track Along Comes Mary became the band's first big hit and landed at number seven on the US charts. Scheff had lost his way during the recording, but the following cover versions took over this mistake. In the following years Scheff established himself as one of the most important studio bass guitarists in Los Angeles. He played on albums by Neil Diamond , Sammy Davis junior , Nancy Sinatra , The Everly Brothers , Pat Boone and Barbra Streisand , among others .
1971 Scheff was signed by The Doors for their album LA Woman . Then there were considerations to include him as a member of the band. However, Jim Morrison's death in Paris ruined this idea and Scheff accepted an offer to become a member of the backing band TCB Band for Elvis Presley , in which he had played briefly in the late 1960s. With interruptions Scheff was from 1969 to 1977 in the band of Presley. On DVD he can be seen in 1973 at Aloha from Hawaii , the first concert broadcast live by satellite in several countries.
From 1978 he played on Bob Dylan's European tour . In the 1980s he worked again mainly as a studio musician. Especially John Denver and Elvis Costello as well as Roy Orbison used his services. From 1997 on, Scheff played for several years in "Elvis - The Concert", a show in which Presley's great hits are played.
