Jerzy Doerffer

Jerzy Wojciech Doerffer (born April 21, 1918 in Groß-Leka , Gostyn district , † August 9, 2006 in Sopot ) was a Polish engineer and from 1981 to 1984 rector of the Technical University of Danzig .

Education and professional career

Born the son of a farmer, Doerffer received his education in Leszno , Second Polish Republic . After an internship at the mechanical engineering company H. Cegielski - Poznań , he began studying engineering at the Technical University of Danzig in the Free City of Danzig in April 1935 . During his studies, he completed part of his practical studies at the Swan Hunter shipyard in Great Britain, which specializes in the construction of passenger ships, and at J. Samuel White on the Isle of Wight , before doing military service in the Polish Navy on the from January to April 1940 ORP Błyskawica performed . Doerffer then enrolled at the University of Glasgow . There he took courses in ship technology , hydraulics and technical mechanics . In 1942 he graduated with a Bachelor of Science and took a job as a ship designer at Vickers-Armstrongs . In mid-January 1946 Doerffer returned to his home country to work at the Danzig shipyard . Despite his professional experience, the Polish authorities did not recognize the degree he had obtained in England, so Doerffer initially returned to the Technical University of Gdansk to complete his studies there in 1950 with a master's degree . In 1951 he was dismissed from the Danzig shipyard due to political differences.

Doerffer initially moved to the Technical University of Gdansk as a research assistant . In 1952 he was initially given a junior professorship . In 1969 he finally accepted the university's appointment to a chair in engineering. In addition to his teaching activities, Doerffer was from 1953 to 1954 and between 1958 and 1964 dean and from 1964 to 1967 deputy chancellor of the university. From 1981 to 1984 he held the post of rector of the university. During this time, the Faculty of Business Administration was opened and numerous partnerships with foreign universities, for example in Denmark and Germany, were entered into, which have continued to this day. In the area of ​​research, Doerffer worked primarily in the areas of building large ships and propulsion technology . The Institute for Shipbuilding, founded by Doerffer in 1968, worked closely with the Polish Navy. He headed this institute until his retirement in 1988. In 1993 he founded the Forum of the Shipping Industry , of which he was chairman until 2003.

Others

Doerffer was married to Maria Teresa Meissner from 1947 until his death, father of four children and eight grandchildren. He is buried in the Sopot cemetery. After his death, a foundation named after him was established with the aim of promoting the training of engineers.
