Jerzy Samiec

Jerzy Samiec (born March 27, 1963 in Cieszyn , Poland ) is a Polish Lutheran theologian and leading bishop of the Evangelical Augsburg Church in Poland .

Life

After attending school in his hometown - it is located in the diocese of Teschen , the region in Poland where the largest Polish evangelical minority lives - Jerzy Samiec began studying theology at the Christian Theological Academy in Warsaw and finished it with an exam in 1988. on January 22, 1989 Samiec was Bishop Janusz Narzyński to the Lutheran clergy ordained .

Samiec was the first to work as a parish priest in Silesia , namely in Zabrze and Gliwice . In 1992 he became provost of the parish in Gliwice.

Samiec also took on the duties of a youth pastor in the diocese of Katowice from 1994 to 2000 and then until 2009 the office of diocesan pastor for evangelism and mission . From 2003 to 2009 he was also President of the Pastors and Catechists' Association of the Evangelical Augsburg Church in Poland.

On April 14, 2007, the Synod of the Polish Evangelical-Augsburg Church elected him its President .

In 2009, when a successor was sought for Bishop Janusz Jagucki , who had to give up his office due to his involvement in the secret service activities during the socialist era, Samiec was chosen. Samiec was proposed on June 24, 2009 by the All-Poland Conference of Evangelical Pastors in Poland as one of three candidates for the election of a bishop of the Evangelical-Augsburg Church in Poland. On October 17, 2009 the Synod elected Samiec bishop by a large majority. He was introduced into office on Epiphany Day , January 6, 2010, in the Church of St. Trinity in Warsaw with the participation of numerous Lutheran bishops from Europe.

Jerzy Samiec was awarded the German Federal Cross of Merit in 2018 .
