Life

Paul Woldemar Everth grew up as the son of Pastor Paul Gottlieb Georg Everth and Eleonore Schmidt near Dorpat (today: Tartu ). He studied theology at the University of Dorpat from 1830 to 1834. From 1836 to 1842 he was a school inspector in Bauske (today: Bauska ).

On December 6, 1842, Everth was ordained to the ministry in the Trinity Church in Mitau (today: Jelgava ) . From 1843 to 1875 he worked as a pastor in Vilnius (today: Vilnius ).

On January 10, 1875, Everth was appointed General Superintendent of the Evangelical-Augsburg Church in Poland by the Russian Tsar Alexander II . As early as 1874, the office of head of the church had been separated from that of the first pastor of the Warsaw parish, so that Everth, who did not speak the Polish language, could still exercise the office. In addition, he was free for the church leadership role in the years 1875 to 1895.

In 1882 Everth was raised to the hereditary nobility and in 1883, on the day of the coronation of Tsar Alexander III. , appointed bishop .

Bishop of Everth went down in the history of the Church as a renewer of the Polish Evangelical Church and an avid missionary. Although he was a strictly denominational Lutheran, he succeeded in restoring the relationship to the Moravian Brethren in Poland, which had been clouded under his predecessor Adolf Theodor Julius Ludwig .

General Superintendent Bishop von Everth died at the age of 83 and was buried in the Protestant cemetery in Vilnius . His successor in the office of general superintendent was Karl Gustav Manitius .

Everth was married a total of five times. Five of his children died in childhood.
