Jesper Lützen

Jesper Lützen (born October 8, 1951 in Svendborg ) is a Danish mathematics and science historian .

Life

Lützen graduated from Aarhus University with a degree in mathematics (with a minor in physics) in 1976 , where he also received his doctorate in history of science under Kirsti Andersen in 1980 (licentiate). In the same year he was a visiting scholar at Yale University (with Asger Aaboe ) and became a temporary lecturer (a temporary assistant professor position) at the University of Odense and from 1985 lecturer at the University of Copenhagen . In 1990 he received his habilitation at the University of Copenhagen (Doctor Scientiarum). He has been a lecturer since 1989 and professor for the history of mathematics at the University of Copenhagen in the Faculty of Mathematics since 2005. He was a visiting scientist in Utrecht (with Henk Bos ), Paris, at the Dibner Institute of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Mittag-Leffler Institute , at Caltech , the University of California, Santa Barbara , and the University of Toronto .

Lützen dealt with the prehistory of distribution theory (before the actual introduction by Sergei Lwowitsch Sobolew around 1936 and Laurent Schwartz around 1950), Joseph Liouville (whose biography he wrote) and Heinrich Hertz and its mechanics. The prehistory of the theory of distributions was also the subject of his dissertation.

In 1990 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Kyōto ( The birth of spectral theory- Joseph Liouville's contributions ). Since 1993 he has been a full member of the International Academy of the History of Science (previously corresponding member from 1988) and he is a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences (1996).

He is co-editor of Archive for History of Exact Sciences , Historia Mathematica and Revue d´histoire de Mathématique as well as the book series Arkimedes and Sources and studies in the history of mathematics and physical sciences (Springer Verlag).

He has been on the Danish National Committee for the History and Philosophy of Sciences since 1986 and the Danish representative on the International Commission on the History of Mathematics since 1990. He is a member of the Danish Mathematical Society, Fellow of the American Mathematical Society , the Danish Society for the History of Science (of which he was president from 1995 to 2006 and of which he has been secretary since 2007) and of the American History of Science Society .

He has been married since 1990 and has three daughters.
